How does one go about getting medals or decorations awarded in service, but never received?

All medals or decorations awarded in service will be listed on the veteran's DD-214. If not listed on the DD-214, the VA will assume there was no award, and the veteran will have to submit documentation to support the award. If the medal or decoration is listed on the DD-214, and the veteran wishes to have a government-issued replacement, each of the military services has its own Washington awards branch office, which can be obtained at the following site http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/awards-and-decorations.html

How does one go about obtaining Military records?

If a veteran has never applied for VA benefits, his/her military records will be stored at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri. To request those records, whether one needs a copy of the DD-214, Service Medical Records, a 201 File, or all of the above, the request has to be submitted on a VA Form SF-180.http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/index.html is the VA Web site for obtaining records from St. Louis.

How and why is one awarded a Purple Heart?

This oldest and most expensive American military decoration is awarded under but one circumstance: the full-time active duty service member sheds blood in combat as a result of a wound suffered at the hands of forces hostile to the United States. Wounds suffered as a result of so-called friendly fire do not meet the criteria for the awarding of a Purple Heart.

How does one start or make changes to Direct Deposit benefits?

To affect a direct deposit of VA monthly stipends, or change one's postal address, the veteran must call the Cleveland Finance Center at 1.800.827.1000. The VA representative will ask the veteran a few personal questions including the routing and transit number of the bank account where the checks are to be sent to verify the veteran is whom he/she claims to be.
